Learning a language gets more difficult as you get older. Children learn to speak through music and singing but adults hardly use this method. Find out if you music and songs can make a difference in yours and your child's language lessons.

We have a few articles on BusSongs about how music can help children learn. There are also a lot of studies done on the subject of music and learning. Another thing that music can help us learn is a new language. We believe that music can help people learn new languages.

Many cultures have their own songs that they sing to their little ones. These songs teach them how to count, to recognize their alphabet, and learn words. If you want to learn a new language and you have to start with the basics then their songs are a good start. Whether you want to learn French, Spanish, German, English, or another language you’ll be able to find kids songs that can help you.

Vocabulary

Let’s say you want to learn Spanish then you can start with a Mexican Counting Song. The lyrics go like this,

"Un elefante se columpiaba, sobre la tela de una araa Como veia que resistia, fua a llamar a otro elefante. Dos elefantes se columpiaban, sobre la leta de una araa, como veian que restistia, fueron a llamar a otro elefante. Tres elefantesse columpiaban, sobre la leta de una araa, como veian que restistia, fueron a llamar a otro elefante. Cuatro elefantes...”.

The english translation is:

“One elephant is swinging on a spider web, Seeing that the web could hold him, He went and got another elephant. Two elephants are swinging on a spider web, Seeing that the web could hold them, they went and got another elephant. Three elephants are swinging on a spider web, Seeing that the web could hold them, they went and got another elephant. Four elephants…”.

A very short and simple song and we already have several counting words, not to mention animal words and more.

One of the key things you need to do when learning a new language is to build your vocabulary. You have to start with basic words before you can move on to sentences and grammar. Songs are a really effective tool to help increase vocabulary. Just take a look at your children and how many words they learn from songs.

Listening and Mimicking

Songs are not just helpful in learning additional vocabulary. They are also very helpful in teaching correct pronunciation. The more you listen to another language the more you become familiar with the way they say things. Developing a strong listening skill can help immensely in learning a language. The better your listening skill is the better your brain processes the sounds it hears. You’ll also have the chance to mimic the pronunciation and the sounds of the language you are trying to learn.

Repetition and mimicking is another method we use to learn and practice a new language. If you do not say the words you will never learn. With songs in the background we are able to practice saying words out loud. We can also listen to the word again to make sure we are saying it correctly.

Learning about the culture

Aside from just learning to speak a new language, learning about the culture is also important. Many Asian countries have specific words that show respect to different people of different stations. This is not so prevalent in Western countries but it is important to learn. By listening to songs we can pick up a few things about another culture.

If you know kids songs or folk songs from another country it can also become a conversation starter. Many people are delighted to encounter someone who is trying to learn their language. They may tease you a little and laugh at your pronunciation but more often than not they mean well and want to help. You can ask them for help and mention a song that you know in their language. This can lead to a great conversation and a quick and fun, impromptu lesson.

So don’t discount children’s music when it comes to language learning. Adding them to a lesson can make it easier and fun. Pretty soon you’ll be singing along to a new song in a new language.

This article is all about music albums that you and your kids can enjoy listening to together. Take a break from normal kids songs and try these out. They are geared for kids but they are great songs that older people can listen to also.
old and new songs to sing to.

We understand that not all parents enjoy children’s songs. There are times when it can become too repetitive and sometimes parents may want to hear a song that they can appreciate more.

There are many artists who do have albums that are good for kids and adults alike. Adding variety to your children’s playlist can make a big difference in you hating a once beloved song because you keep playing it over and over again. The more diverse the songs and the genres in your child’s playlist the more you’ll probably be able to bear listening to it again and again.

We put together a brief list of music albums that you can look into if you want to add more songs. Some of them may not be to your tastes but we hope that you will discover some new musical treasures on our list. We did not include music albums from kids on this list.

Our goal here is not to promote the artist or make you buy their album. We just want to share what we have found. The list is also not placed in any sort of order.

Kenny Loggins Return to Pooh Corner - This album is filled with favourite songs that Kenny Loggins has redone. If you want a quiet album with songs you can use as lullabies this is the album to get.

Lisa Loeb was an award winning artist first and after some years in her career she came out with this album. Catch the Moon is a collection of children's music played in a folk music style. She is joined by her college music partner, Elizabeth Mitchell.

Lullabies of Broadway
If you love Broadway musicals then this is a great album to get for you and your little one.

Jack Johnson will always have a place on our playlist. His soothing, upbeat songs are always a lot of fun to listen and sing to. Jack Johnson and Friends is a must have album.

Reggae beats are always fun so we have to have Ziggy Marley's, Family Time, on the list. Ziggy won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Album for Children.

Laurie Berkner
Laurie Berkner has been singing and writing children’s songs for a long time. She has a lot of great albums and songs. But if you are going to listen to her for the first time, you should give this album a try.

They Might Be Giants is one of the newest bands on the list. They have several albums for kids already. This one though seems to be the most recommended. Listen to them and if you and your children like what you hear get this album for your kids.

We hope that you try out the albums we mentioned on our list. Before you buy any of them see if you can listen to a sample first, that way you can check to see if you really want it. You can also try to find the songs on Youtube.

We advocate music for everyone, especially children. Aside from being a wonderful form of expression and art form there are many benefits that children get from music. Here are just a few things that children get from music education.

There has been a lot of scientific study on how music benefits children of all ages. It is true that music is one of the best ways that we can connect with each other. But music can do so much more for all of us.

The power of music cannot be mentioned enough or emphasized enough. So many great memories are made with the help of music. So many lessons are learned through song and dance.

Here is an episode of Tedx by Richard Gill, Music Director of the Victorian Opera Company.

Music helps children learn. When they take music classes they are not just learning how to play an instrument or sing a song. They are also going through a whole process of learning.

  1. They have to sit and listen to the lesson. This helps them practice their listening skills. Getting used to staying still and paying attention is a great skill to learn. Sitting still is not easy for little kids and it is important that we keep music lessons fun. So make sure lessons are accompanied with some fun dancing and gestures.

  2. Listening skills get developed. The more used to listening a child is the more likely it is that they are able to listen well. Since they are always using this skill during music lessons it gets really well used. This also helps them learn new words.

  3. Increased vocabulary when learning music. A lot of songs will use different words and that means your children get exposed to more words when they take music lessons. Better vocabulary can also help with reading. Even important life lessons, like cleaning up can be picked up when children are in music class.

  4. Music and dancing go hand in hand. Dancing is a great way for kids to develop their motor skills. It is also a good way to get them to exercise without making it feel like work. Regular singing and dancing activities can help strengthen your child’s muscles. It will also make moving or dancing feel more natural. Although, for most kids, dancing is already as natural as breathing.

  5. Creativity is encouraged in music. Children who love to sing will start making up their songs. Mixing different sounds and words together is one way that they express themselves. Their brains are putting together the things that they have learned and molding it into a song that may or may not make sense to us, but to our little ones it is a fun learning experience. Encourage them to sing their own songs and make their own music. Join them and make up some silly songs to sing to each other. Creating your own music is the most important thing they can learn.

  6. Group lessons in music help develop a child’s sense of community and teamwork. Group activities are great for kids because they learn more about their world and the other people that inhabit it. They learn to do things together, to take turns, and to socialize with other kids.

All of these extra lessons are naturally experienced by children in music class. Not every child is meant to be a singer or a dancer but every child can benefit by taking music lessons. Children can greatly benefit from music but always remember to keep it fun for the little ones. Also, take the time to sing and dance with your kids. It is much more fun when you are doing things with your kids.

And if you want to find the best songs to use for your singing and dancing with your little ones, head over to our list of songs and you’ll find all the songs you need.

Here is a short list of some of the popular songs that you might hear on the radio. Our list is comprised of baby and kid friendly popular songs. Have a great time listening and singing along to them.
BusSongs.com our goal is to find and collect wonderful songs that children can sing, dance, and listen to. Our collection of lyrics is mostly old children’s songs, cultural songs, and timeless classic music for kids. While these are always great to sing and dance to there are a whole host of songs that are being created every year. So we wanted to make a short list of popular songs that may or may not be on your playlist yet.

We don’t mean to sound old and crotchety but we know a lot of parents feel that a lot of the popular songs played everywhere have lyrics that are not the best for children. We hope this list helps you find new songs and artists. This list is not meant to rank the music and artists mentioned. We just want to share some great music for children and everyone.

Katy Perry - Firework and Roar

Katy Perry is the first on our list thanks to 2 of her hit songs. Firework and Roar are both part of the top hits of the past few years. Firework was released in 2010 and Roar was released in 2013. Both are still part of our playlist and we play it frequently for the kids.

Both songs have a great message about self empowerment and belief in yourself.

This is by far the best version of Roar that we have seen.

Ellie Goulding also has some lovely songs that are great for kids. If you want a slower song that can work as a lullaby then give this song a listen. If you play the guitar then it is also a beautiful song to play and sing to your kids.

  • One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful
  • Pharrell Williams - Happy
  • P!nk - Perfect (Look for the clean version)
  • OneRepublic - Counting Stars
  • Lorde - Royals
  • Owl City - All of his songs
  • Sara Bareilles - Brave (A lot of her songs are good too)

  • Phillip Phillips - Home
  • Ben Harper - Steal My Kisses
  • Christina Aguilera - Beautiful
  • Train - Hey, Soul Sister
  • Flo Rida - Good Feeling
  • K’s Choice - Echo Mountain

There are a lot more amazing songs that you can listen to with your kids. It is always a great idea to listen to new and different artists. Our short list is just an example that there are many songs that are good for kids and adults. These aren’t the only songs that are on our playlist when we listen to music with our little ones. Sometimes the radio is not the best source for music. Ask your friends and family members if they have discovered a new singer who has great tunes. It is also important to listen closely to the popular songs being played so you know what they are singing about. You can always find really great children’s songs here on BusSongs.

Here is one last song that we love to play all the time. It is performed by the talented Michael Buble. This upbeat love song is wonderful to listen to, sing to, and dance to.
