Information About 10 Little Indians

The original song "10 Little Indians" was composed by Septimus Winner in 1868, written specifically for a minstrel show and was much more elaborate than the song that we now know and was known then as "Ten Little Injuns".

This is a children's rhyming song that can be sung to the tune of "Michael Finnegan". It is a repetitive song which makes it easy to sing and helps with counting backwards.

There are many versions of this song that have been used in shows and books previously and the song has been quoted in many novels, like Agatha Christies, And Then There Were None.

I think that this song does not offend anyone. Its just a normal counting song involving 'little indians'.It does not say any bad things about indians.Other than that , i really enjoyed that song when i was a kid.I still do now! but not sooo much like when i was small of course... btw: it is soooo NOT teasing indians..

Seeing as we are no longer aloud to call native americans indians a mistake made by christopher columbus when he landed here wouldn't the song be referring to the real indians of ... India... I would have to agree we sing all kinds of songs from ring around the rosie to londan bridges... Children are so innocent they aren't prejudice or raciest and singing a song that teaches counting in a fun way... I mean we sing ten in the bed about the depression... really its counting

My 4 year old daughter came home from Pre-K singing this song and I was horrified! I don't understand how any of you can justify singing this song by saying it is fun, or that it celebrates Native American heritage, or that 'Indian' isn't derogatory, or that it's a counting song. Lighten up? Why not grow up? A simple google of "Thanksgiving songs" yields all sorts of fun, respectful and worthwhile songs. It's unthinkable that any parent would want to teach their kids to denigrate another person - let alone a diverse group of millions. I'm not an uptight suburban mom - I live in a diverse city, hold a full time job as a teacher, but I care about my kids and other people's kids, too. Stop relying on what you learned in grade school and start building an inclusive society by making good choices for all kids - even in song. Songs matter, especially when the words kids sing are STUPID.

This song does not reflect our non-racist values and should not be sung in schools. Let us not be nostalgic for a colonial past built on white supremacy. We now know that Indigenous Native Americans (not the misnamed Indians or Savages as they were also once referred to) are humans with equal validity of life as anyone. Do not sing songs or renditions of hate and white supremacy, most people today do not believe in continuing the illegitimate illegal colonial legacy.

I have a different version: 1,2,3, little indians, 4,5,6,little indians, 7,8,9 little indians, ten in the little boat. they were navigating down the river, when the alligator came around, and the little indians' little boat almost almost come down.

Look, I'm from Australia, do I don't really understand this whole 'native Americans' thing. BUT this song is a COUNTING song for kids. They are not thinking about oh! They are teasing indians! They are thinking hey! This song is catchy or hmm what come after 3? Seriously guys, it's a children's song. And if you don't like, oh well lucky you don't have to listen to it :)

Oh good grief! Why has everything got to be about America? India is a country and the people there are Indians.
