Information About 10 Little Indians

The original song "10 Little Indians" was composed by Septimus Winner in 1868, written specifically for a minstrel show and was much more elaborate than the song that we now know and was known then as "Ten Little Injuns".

This is a children's rhyming song that can be sung to the tune of "Michael Finnegan". It is a repetitive song which makes it easy to sing and helps with counting backwards.

There are many versions of this song that have been used in shows and books previously and the song has been quoted in many novels, like Agatha Christies, And Then There Were None.

Alternative Lyrics & Related Songs

This song has Indian boys and girls

One little two little three little Indians
Four little five little six little Indians
Seven little eight little nine little Indians
Ten little Indians boys and girls.

They jumped in the boat and the boat tipped over
They jumped in the boat and the boat tipped over
They jumped in the boat and the boat tipped over
Ten little Indians boys and girls.

They swam and they swam and they swam to the shore
They swam and they swam and they swam to the shore
They swam and they swam and they swam to the shore
Ten little Indians boys and girls.

They ran and they ran and they ran to their mothers
They ran and they ran and they ran to their mothers
They ran and they ran and they ran to their mothers
Ten little Indians boys and girls.

They slept and they slept and they slept til the morning
They slept and they slept and they slept til the morning
They slept and they slept and they slept til the morning
Ten little Indians boys and girls.

Native Americans are the true Natives of the USA and they went through hell and still lost their land and were put on Reservations. They are in most cases treated like 5th class citizens while Black and Latinos have moved up more. Thank you Lord! Native Americans were called Indians because Christopher Columbus found this country while looking for a shorter route to India but most settlers and American pronounce the name incorrectly E (Endian) and worse names even in the "50's and still today. Many have made great strive there in all branches of the military and other good jobs. In order to annihilate and drive the Native Americans from the American landscape they killed off most of the Buffalo, they tried breeding them out but too many (having blue eyes and blonde hair is better), making it mandatory for the young children to go to English specking school and they have men to kidnap these children (more untold torment). Americans in power couldn't stand when the Native Americans did well. Making them travel in mid-winter once gold was discovered on their land or from a new reservation when they turn barren land into a garden by irrigating the land, given unclean blankets in winter and give rotten and bad food. But you may read ½ pargrapher of the Native American who stated and developed Landscaping if you take up the class. Some governors in so states hired and paid men to kill as many Natives as they could, but you want find that in the history books. Almost driving the Natives into extinction with a few in their group but mostly outsiders.

@nathan from New Zealand it's not that the USA thinks that everything is about them, when Christopher Colombus found the new world he thought he had landed in the country of India and therefore called the native people "Indians" but he didn't make it to India and instead he was calling 'native Americans' as 'Indians' and it has been a name for them ever since

Americans are sick! Sick, because they think any mention of Indians by other Americans must be derogatory, and also that any mention of boys must mean that girls are being excluded. Just SICK!

Why are so many Americans so self absorbed they think everything has to be about the USA? India is a country. Indians are from India.

I think that this song does not offend anyone. Its just a normal counting song involving 'little indians'.It does not say any bad things about indians.Other than that , i really enjoyed that song when i was a kid.I still do now! but not sooo much like when i was small of course... btw: it is soooo NOT teasing indians..

Seeing as we are no longer aloud to call native americans indians a mistake made by christopher columbus when he landed here wouldn't the song be referring to the real indians of ... India... I would have to agree we sing all kinds of songs from ring around the rosie to londan bridges... Children are so innocent they aren't prejudice or raciest and singing a song that teaches counting in a fun way... I mean we sing ten in the bed about the depression... really its counting

My 4 year old daughter came home from Pre-K singing this song and I was horrified! I don't understand how any of you can justify singing this song by saying it is fun, or that it celebrates Native American heritage, or that 'Indian' isn't derogatory, or that it's a counting song. Lighten up? Why not grow up? A simple google of "Thanksgiving songs" yields all sorts of fun, respectful and worthwhile songs. It's unthinkable that any parent would want to teach their kids to denigrate another person - let alone a diverse group of millions. I'm not an uptight suburban mom - I live in a diverse city, hold a full time job as a teacher, but I care about my kids and other people's kids, too. Stop relying on what you learned in grade school and start building an inclusive society by making good choices for all kids - even in song. Songs matter, especially when the words kids sing are STUPID.

This song does not reflect our non-racist values and should not be sung in schools. Let us not be nostalgic for a colonial past built on white supremacy. We now know that Indigenous Native Americans (not the misnamed Indians or Savages as they were also once referred to) are humans with equal validity of life as anyone. Do not sing songs or renditions of hate and white supremacy, most people today do not believe in continuing the illegitimate illegal colonial legacy.
