3 Blind Mice
Song Lyrics & Words
Three blind mice,
Three blind mice,
See how they run!
See how they run!
They all ran after the farmer's wife,
Who cut off their tails,
With a carving knife.
Did you ever see such a thing in your life,
As three blind mice.

Three blind mice, three blind mice
See how they spin, see how they spin
They pin the tail on the kitty cat,
While wearing silly party hats.
Did you ever see such a silly sight,
As three blind mice.
Here's another version
Three Blind Mice,
Three Blind Mice,
Dame Iulian,
Dame Iulian,
The Miller and his merry olde Wife,
She scrapte her tripe licke thou the knife.
Information About This Song
The song was 1st published in 1609 and is written by Thomas Ravenscroft. Here's a possible history for Three blind Mice as a satire of Queen Mary 1st. If so, then you may also want to refer to "Froggie Went A Courtin'" - a song about animals refering to the court of Mary's sister Queen Elizabeth.
The origin of the 'tale' of Three blind mice! The origin of the words to the Three blind mice rhyme are based in English history. The 'farmer's wife' refers to the daughter of King Henry VIII, Queen Mary I. Mary was a staunch Catholic and her violent persecution of Protestants led to the nickname of 'Bloody Mary'. The reference to 'farmer's wife' in Three blind mice refers to the massive estates which she, and her husband King Philip of Spain, possessed. The 'three blind mice' were three noblemen who adhered to the Protestant faith who were convicted of plotting against the Queen - she did not have them dismembered and blinded as inferred in Three blind mice - but she did have them burnt at the stake! Another Nursery Rhyme which features 'Bloody Mary' can be found as follows: Mary Mary Quite Contrary Nursery Rhyme

I'll stick with the newer lyrics for grade two, but thanks for the Middle English and history lesson which makes it appropriate for many levels - and, I learned too. You have a great site that I will revisit often.
