Lyrics

A Horse is a Horse (Mr. Ed) TV Show

A horse is a horse, of course, of course,
And no one can talk to a horse of course
That is, of course, unless the horse is the famous Mister Ed.

Go right to the source and ask the horse
He'll give you the answer that you'll endorse.
He's always on a steady course.
Talk to Mister Ed.

People yakkity-yak a streak and waste your time of day
But Mr. Ed will never speak unless he has something to say.

A horse is a horse, of course, of course,
And this one'll talk 'til his voice is hoarse.
You never heard of a talking horse?

Well listen to this: "I'm Mister Ed".

Information About A Horse is a Horse (Mr. Ed) TV Show

"Horse is a Horse" is the theme song for American TV show Mr. Ed, aired on CBS from 1961 to 1966. Mr. Ed was a palomino horse, who could talk, but only to his owner. Wilbur Post (played by Alan Young), was an architect who had his office in the same barn that stabled. Mr. Ed. Mr. Ed was voiced by Allan Lane, a country western star.

The song was written by songwriters Jay Livingston and Ray Evans and sung by Jay Livingston. The song was taken after a theme from EmileWaldterfel, a German Romantic era composer.

For the very first six episodes of the show only an instrumental version of the song was used, but when a professional singer could not be found, Livingston decided to sing the lyrics himself.

Mr. Ed was based on a short story, The Talking Horse, by 1930's author Walter R. Brooks. Reruns of the series can still be seen on a variety of stations that feature old shows from the 1960's.

The theme song, "Horse is a Horse,' continues to remain popular among young children, especially girls, who dream of someday owning their own pony or horse.
