All Around the Mulberry Bush

Song Lyrics & Words

All around the mulberry bush
The monkey chased the weasel.
The monkey thought 'twas all in fun.
Pop! goes the weasel.

A penny for a spool of thread,
A penny for a needle.
That's the way the money goes.
Pop! goes the weasel.

Up and down the City Road,
In and out of the Eagle,
That's the way the money goes.
Pop! goes the weasel.

Half a pound of tuppenney rice,
Half a pound of treacle,
Mix it up and make it nice,
Pop! goes the weasel.

Information About This Song

This song originates back to the 15th or 16th century. Supposedly a song which the prisoners of Wakefield Prison (West Yorkshire) sang as they went for a walk in the grounds every morning, around the Mulberry bush which still stands today. Hence 'on a cold and frosty morning'. Each line in the song represtents what the prisoners did on daily basis. These were sung as they walked aroung the bush every morning.

Video is for "Here we go 'Round the Mulberry Bush, NOT "All around the Mulberry Bush." And I learned this song as "All around the vinegar jug, the monkey chased the weasel, etc." I've also heard it as "All around the cobbler's bench, the monkey chased the weasel, etc."

Here We Go 'Round the Mulberry Bush was a different song. All around the Mulberry Bush would be the correct lyrics for this song.
