My mother sang this song to my brothers and me especially when we didn't want to go to bed.

I first heard this lullaby in the film Awakenings. I loved it so much I looked up the words to learn them. I was reminded of it recently on hearing the very sad news of Robin Williams' death so I've added it to the songs I sing the my grandson at bedtime .

This was my favorite lullaby as a child. Thanks for printing the lyrics. Listening to my mother sing it made everything well in my world, back in the 50's. She's passed, but her spirit can be found in these lyrics.

I remember singing this song around the fire at Timber Trail Girl Scout Camp in Upper Michigan. I've been trying to remember the words - oddly remembered the second verse but not the first!

PS: I'm 70. Grandma was born in 1891, and sang this song to her children. I'm betting her mother sang it to her, too.

I plagued my grandmother to sing this song to me for most of my young years. Our variation was Baby's boat's a silver moon, sailing in the sky, sailing on a sea of dreams, while the clouds float by. Sail, baby, sail out upon the sea. Only don't forget to sail home again to me. If Grandma sang a second verse, I've forgotten it.

My mother sang this lullaby to me when I was very small - about 1936. I still remember it and her singing it to me, especially the chorus.

My very first memory is of my mother singing this lullaby to me. I had to be a toddler ( I am now 73). When I think of my late mother, I think of this song.

Baby's boat's a silver moon ,sailing near and far. Baby's boat's silver moon, their guides a silver star. Sail my baby sail, out upon that sea. Only don't forget to sail back again to me.

This version is very close to lullaby my mother sang to us as children. We did not know there was a second verse. The movie "Awakenings" has this song in it and sounds much the way we sing it. The way I learned the song: Baby Boats Baby's boat a silver moon, sailing near and far. Sailing over a sea of blue, while the clouds roll by. Sail, baby, sail out across the sea, Only don't forget to sail home again to me.
