Brahms Lullaby

Song Lyrics & Words

Lullaby, and good night,
With pink roses bedight,
With lilies o'erspread,
Is my baby's sweet head.
Lay you down now, and rest,
May your slumber be blessed!
Lay you down now, and rest,
May thy slumber be blessed!

Lullaby, and good night,
You're your mother's delight,
Shining angels beside
My darling abide.
Soft and warm is your bed,
Close your eyes and rest your head.
Soft and warm is your bed,
Close your eyes and rest your head.

Sleepyhead, close your eyes.
Mother's right here beside you.
I'll protect you from harm,
You will wake in my arms.
Guardian angels are near,
So sleep on, with no fear.
Guardian angels are near,
So sleep on, with no fear.

Lullaby, and sleep tight.
Hush! My darling is sleeping,
On his sheets white as cream,
With his head full of dreams.
When the sky's bright with dawn,
He will wake in the morning.
When noontide warms the world,
He will frolic in the sun.

Alternative Lyrics & Words

Roses whisper "goodnight"
'neath the sil'vry light
asleep on the dew
they hide from our view
when the dawn peepeth through
God will wake them and you
when the dawn peepeth through
God will wake them and you

Slumber deeply my dear
For the angels are near
to watch over you
the silent night through
and to bear you above
to the dreamland of love
and to bear you above
to the dreamland of love

Original German Lyrics

Guten Abend, gute Nacht, Mit Rosen bedacht,
Mit Naeglein besteckt, schlupf unter die Deck'
Morgen frueh, wenn Gott will, wirst du wieder geweckt
Morgen frueh, wenn Gott will, wirst du wieder geweckt

Guten Abend, gute Nacht, Von Englein bewacht
Die zeigen im Traum, dir Christkindleins Baum
Schlaf nun selig und suess, Schau im Traum's Paradies
Schlaf nun selig und suess, Schau im Traum's Paradies

Another Version

"When at night I go to sleep,
Fourteen angels watch do keep-
Two to whom are given,
To guide my steps to Heaven."

Yet Another Version

Lullaby and good night
with roses bed night
climb into thy bed
there pillow thy head
If God will, thou will wake
when the morning doth break
If God will thou will wake
when the morning doth break.

What an awesome website! I my mom made up her own lyrics to this song to sing to us when we were little. I've always wondered what the real lyrics are and I finally found it! I'm incredibly grateful for this great site, but I think I'll always prefer my mom's more!

My mum used to sing this Lullaby all through my childhood, I have been looking for the words. But she also used to sing it in Gaelic, coming from an Irish family, so did my Nan. Dought ill ever find those words though.
