Information About Dance to Your Daddy

The song "Dance to Your Daddy" is familiarly known as "Diddle, Diddle, Dumpling, My Son John".

The rhyme was first recorded in The Newest Christmas Box published in London around 1797 and may have derived from the traditional street cry of "Diddle, diddle, diddle Dumpling' by the dumpling sellers of the time.

The song comes from the north-east of England.

Love your Daddy? We do too! Clap Hands till Daddy Comes is another great song to enjoy with your father.

Not the right lyrics - So Many Alternatives. My knowledge, the gifts were all fish related. Bloater, Lobster, Crab etc. Northern England Song. Times were hard. Different TUNE. NOT THE SAME AS DIDDLE DIDDLE DUMPLING, MY SON JOHN. I sang both of these nursery songs to my son with different tunes. :)

Thank you for this site. I was racking my brains for 2 days trying to remember the opening line of this ditty! If you've ever read the Fables comic books by Bill Willingham, you'll understand why at times adults without children of their own sometimes search out childhood information that's become hazy with age! His stories have re-activated my college-days fascination with fairy tales, fables and rhymes. They are, after all, our oral traditions and have tremendous value for that alone. Again, thanks!
