Information About Down By The Bay

Down by the Bay is a traditional children's song, possibly of Greek origin. There is a traditional Cephalonian Kantada called 'Yialo Yialo' that has the same melody. It was made famous by a singer named Raffi in 1976. He recorded his version on his album titled Singable Songs for the Very Young.

The song is adaptable, and promotes creativity as well as rhyming skills. As long as the last ling is formed 'Did you ever see a ___, ___ing a ____', you can fill in the blanks with almost anything. The song has gained popularity as a campfire song, especially by the Scouting movement.

Variations of this song has been used in many diffrent movies and television shows. For example the traditional Greek version was used in the 1961 movie The Guns of Navarone. It was also featured in episodes of Franklin and the Berenstain Bears. There is even a version recorded by Dora and her cousin Diego on the album Diego,Dora and Friends' Animal Jamboree.

There are many differentactions you can perform when singing this rhyme. More often that not, it is used to keep the beat for hand clapping games.

Never heard this in all my years and I'm very old!. My surrogate grandaughter sang it last night and it was lovely. We added things like - Polly with her very old Dolly and Mummy sucking a dummy. I loved it and will teach it to my own grandchildren when my own kids have children. (Not that I'm nagging them to!)

I sing this song to my son to get him to sleep. I made up the lyrics as I went along, playing the "A-B-C" Game. (Ex. Have you ever seen an ant with polka-dot pants..." He loves it.
