Elizabeth, Elspeth, Betsy, and Bess,
They all went together to seek a bird's nest;
They found a bird's nest with five eggs in,
They all took one, and left four in.

Information About Elizabeth

The song "Elizabeth" is also referred to as "Elizabeth, Elspeth, Betsy and Bess". The song may appear nonsense at first but although it would appear to be talking about four people, it is really just about the one person because all of those names are diminutives of Elizabeth. For that reason each one of the four (Elizabeth plus her diminutives) were able to take one egg from five, yet leave four in.
