My mother sang this song with additional words. The first part was as you have it in the additional words and lyrics. The it goes " I saw you go to sleep, last night before I stopped my playing. How did you get way over there and where have you been staying? (Sun answers) I never go to sleep dear child, I just go round to see the little children of the East who rise and watch for me. I waken all the birds and bees and flowers on my way and then come back to see the child that stayed out to play"

My father's family, born from early 1890's to 1910, recited the words this way... "Good morning, merry sunshine. How did you wake so soon? You scared the pretty stars away, and shined away the moon. I saw you go to bed last night before I ceased my playing. How did you get way over there, and where have you been staying? Dear child, I went around the world The other side to see The little children of the East who rise and wait for me. I wake up all the birds and bees and flowers on my way, And last of all the little (boy or girl) who stayed up so late to play"

Bought some old 78's at a garage sale when kids were little (25 yrs ago or so) and this was among the song collection. It stuck in my head and I would sing it to them in the mornings. They HATED it and to this day I "innocently" ask them if they'd like me to sing it to them and they try to hang up on me - LOL! Memories...
