Grand Old Flag
Song Lyrics & Words
You're a grand old flag,
You're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You're the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
Ev'ry heart beats true
'neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or brag.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.
Information About This Song
Written by George M. Cohan. Cohan has explained where he found the inspiration to write these verses, from an encounter he had with a Civil War veteran who fought at Gettysburg. 2 men at the battle front next to each other and Cohan saw that the vet held a ragged old flag. That vet then turned around and told Cohan, "She's a grand old rag." The song was originally titled "Grand Old Rag" but later it was thought that the word 'Rag' would not be fitting thus Cohan after originally naming his tune "You're a Grand Old Rag," then titled the song "Grand Old Flag."
