Here's The Church

Song Video

Here's the church and there's the steeple.
Open the door and see all the people.
Here's the parson going upstairs.
And here he is saying his prayers.

My mother, whilst in India (having escaped Japanese occupation of Burma) during WWII, would tell of how they'd while away their days telling rhymes ... She'd affect the stance & bearing of a Parson & recite: "Dearly beloved breathern Don't you think it is a sin? That when you peel a potato, You throw away the skin? For the skin feeds the swine And the swine feeds us? Dearly beloved breatherin , Don't you think thus?

My grand mother used to sing a longer version of this: Here's the parson going upstairs, Here's the parson saying his prayers. 'Lord god almighty, isn't it a sin, to peel the potatoes and throw away the skin? It then goes on to suggest that if you feed the skin to pigs then eat the pigs, you might just as well have eaten the skin, but I don't quite remember it. Can anyone help?
