Hey Diddle Diddle

Song Video

Hey diddle diddle,
The cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon,
The little dog laughed to see such sport,
And the dish ran away with the spoon.

Information About Hey Diddle Diddle

Hey Diddle Diddle, as recorded in Jim Henson's Mother Goose Stories,is an English folk tale that was first documented around 1765 as far as research goes. All adaption of this rhyme are supposed to have originated from the same people, though there are many different variations of what actually inspired it.

Some believe it describes the Flight from Egypt, while others argue that it's about a complex love triangle between three of England's well known. It is rumored to be the story of Peter the Great's wife, and some suggest that it's a ballot of the corruption of ancient Greece.

Quite a few people believe that it's an adaptation and interpretation of certain constellations.

Because of the wonderful imagery mentioned in the rhyme there are many theories that try to explain its origin and meaning, however it is most probably just nonsense and without meaning.

Check out this book on Amazon called And the Dish Ran Away with the Spoon.

Alternative Lyrics & Related Songs

A lesser known version from Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

And the cat on his fiddle
Played hey diddle diddle
A tune that could wake the dead.

Here's a version that may be familiar or it might not, either way, it's a fun song

With a ping and a pong
The fiddle strings broke
The cow jumped over the moon
the little dog laughed to see such fun
And the Saturday dish went off at a run with the silver Sunday spoon.

Instead of fiddle, the cat has a guitar

Hey diddle diddle
The cat and the guitar
The cow jumped over the star
The little dog barfed
To see such strife
And the dish ran away with the knife.
