Lyrics

Hush-a-bye, baby,
In the tree top.
When the wind blows,
The cradle will rock.
When the bough breaks,
The cradle will fall,
And down will come baby,
Cradle and all.

Information About Hush A Bye Baby

Hush A Bye Baby first appeared in print in Mother Goose's Melody around 1765. At some point, possibly during the 18th century, the lyric Hush A Bye Baby was replaced by the more popular Rock A Bye Baby.

The origin of Hush A Bye Baby is unclear but the lyrics could have been written in America. It is believed the rhyme was written by a young pilgrim who travelled to US on the Mayflower. Originally titled "Hushabye Baby", it is considered, by some, to be the first poem written on American soil.

The melody could be a variant of 'Lilliburlero' an English satirical ballad.

cause mommy will catch you cradle and all.

Hush-a-bye baby, thy cradle is green
Father’s a nobleman, Mother’s a queen
Sister’s a lady and wears a gold ring
Brother’s a drummer and drums for the king
