Hush, Little Baby
Hush, Little Baby Lyrics
Hush, little baby, don't say a word,
Papa's gonna buy you a mockingbird.
And if that mockingbird don't sing,
Papa's gonna buy you a diamond ring.
And if that diamond ring turn brass,
Papa's gonna buy you a looking glass.
And if that looking glass gets broke,
Papa's gonna buy you a billy goat.
And if that billy goat don't pull,
Papa's gonna buy you a cart and bull.
And if that cart and bull turn over,
Papa's gonna buy you a dog named Rover.
And if that dog named Rover won't bark.
Papa's gonna to buy you and horse and cart.
And if that horse and cart fall down,
Well you'll still be the sweetest little baby in town.

Hush, Little Baby Alternative Lyrics
Another version goes like this
Hush little baby
don't say a word,
Mama's gonna buy you
a mocking bird,
If that mocking bird don't sing,
Mama's gonna buy you
a diamond ring,
If that diamond ring gets broke,
Mama's gonna buy you
a billy goat,
If that billy goat don't pull,
Mama's gonna buy you
a cart 'n bull,
If that cart 'n bull turn over,
Mama's gonna buy you
a dog named Rover,
If that dog named Rover
don't bark,
Mama's gonna buy you
a horse 'n cart,
Hush little baby don't say
a word,
Mama's gonna buy you
a mocking bird,
If that mocking bird don't sing,
Mama's gonna buy you
a diamond ring,
If that diamond ring don't shine,
Hush little baby don't you mind,
Cuz if that diamond ring
don't shine,
Mama's gonna love you
'til the end of time,
I'm always gonna love you
'til the end of time.
An interesting verse
And if that looking glass gets broke,
Papa's gonna buy you a Billy Goat,
And if that Billy goat runs away Papa's
gonna buy you a stack of hay,
If that stack of hay falls down, papa's gonna run you out of this
town.
Alternative Version
Hush little baby don't you cry
Papa's going to buy you an apple pie
If that apple pie turns sour
Papa's going to buy you a pretty flower
If that flower starts to fade
Papa's going to buy you some lemonade
If that lemonade's too cold
Papa's going to buy you a ring of gold
If that ring of gold rolls away
Papa's going to rock his baby all day
One More Versions
Hush little baby, don't say a word,
Momma's going to buy you a mocking bird.
If that mocking bird won't sing,
Momma's going buy you a dimond ring.
If that dimond ring turns brass,
Momma's going to buy you a looking glass.
If that looking glass gets broke,
Momma's going to buy you a billy goat.
If that billy goat gets bony.
Momma's going to buy you a shetland pony.
If that shetland pony runs away.
Momma's going to buy you another some day.
Additional verses found in the book "Hush Little Baby", by Sylvia Long
Hush little baby, don't say a word,
Mamas going to show you a hummingbird.
If that hummingbird should fly,
Mama's going to show you the evening sky.
When the nighttime shadows fall,
Mama's going to hear the crickets call.
While their song drifts from afar,
Mama's going to search for a shooting star.
When that star has dropped from view,
Mama's going to read a book with you.
When that story has been read,
Mama's going to bring your warm bedspread.
If that quilt begins to wear,
Mama's going to find your teddy bear.
If that teddy bear won't hug,
Mama's going to catch you a lightning bug.
If that lightning bug won't glow,
Mama's going to play on her old banjo.
If that banjo's out of tune,
Mama's going to show you the harvest moon.
As that moon drifts through the sky,
Mama's going to sing you a lullaby.
A sweet extra line to honour Dad
So hush little baby don't you cry, cause Daddy loves you and so do I.
Information About Hush, Little Baby
"Hush Little Baby" is usually sung as a lullaby and the song is sometimes referred to as''Mockingbird''. The song is most likely to be American but its author and origin are unknown.
This was originally a song sung by mothers to the children whilst the father was off hunting.
Other versions contain Mama and even Granny, yet the original was Papa.
Charlie Foxx arranged and then recorded "Mockingbird" with his sister Inez in 1963; a rhythm and blues version using lyrics based on the traditional song.
This song has also been covered by Carly Simon and James Taylor amongst others; also Bo Diddley used the lyrics in one of his songs.

Thank you much for having this song. I have a new grandson who is 8 months old and I was trying to remember the words my Mother use to sing to me. I guess there were a lot of mothers that could not remember the exact words so they made up their own. But no matter it is nice to know that you can always find what you want on the internet.
By Damien from Montgomery, Al on 20 March 2009
Thanks for posting these words... I have been trying to remember the words and could only get as far as billy goat before I forgot the rest of the words... and i knew horse and cart came in sometime, but couldn't figure how to get to it. Oh and these are the real lyrics cassidy; just read The Dorling Kindersley Book of Nursery Rhymes (2000). Odds are your parents sang some other version because they could not remember all the words... there have been many alterations to this song because people forget and make up their own words and it is so easy to fit the meter.
By Colm from Ireland on 22 March 2009
great to find these lyrics again. Not all the words are the same as we remember but they are close enough for us to improvise...

I absolutely love the fact that this song was so important to every family, that even if they could not remember the words, they still found a way to create a version suitable for their families! I wish I knew the original versions origin. I also would like to know if anyone knows the version that says, "hush little baby don't you cry, mamas gonna sing you a lullaby?" I love all these versions but wish that I could work that sentence into it...right now I just add it at the end, my grandma used to use include sentence!

Good to see all the different lyrics and other peoples twists to it. I like the idea of using their (the child's) name. As a baby gets to be more familiar with their name. My boy's name is Bear and I like to create a forest setting to this lullaby lol ;) <3 NW Oregon

By Emma from Antarctica on 3 April 2011
I wasn't sure what the entire song was, but for some reason I thought that it went like this (I made up the parts that I didn't know) :Hush little baby don't you cry, mama's going to sing you a lullaby. And if that lullaby ain't heard, mama's going to buy you a humming bird. And if that humming bird won't sing, mama's going to buy you a diamond ring. And if that diamond ring don't shine, (this is the part I made up) Mama's going to buy you a fishing line. And if that fishing line goes broke, mama's going to buy you a maple oak (don't know if there's even such a thing as a maple oak) And if that maple oak runs dry, Mama's going to sing you a lullaby... I don't know where I heard that version. I made up the fishing line part, because I wasn't sure what to put there....

I sing this to my gammy babies, who call me ønëí. My youngest boy, who is one of the toughest to put to bed, he listened to my broken version(before I visited this website) and he fell RIGHT to sleep. Somehow, there is an underlining MAGIC,and peacefullness in this song, that literally soothes children to rest. I still haven't memrized the original version, but, it worked! I love this song!
By Teri from United States on 7 June 2011
I just posted. When I sang this song, I used my own tribal(given name) during the song.I sang, 'ønëí's' gunna buy you a diamond ring...and so on. I figure, keeping this song personalized, somehow soothes the ever so young spirit in children, making them feel close to their parent, protector or guardian. I feel, there are no rules in this lulluby song. You sing to your little ones, what they are familier to. That makes them feel the most safe. This is why this song is so tenderly special. We love & care for our little ones in diferent ways. No lyric,is a wrong lyric. Sing it with love, and it creates a peacefull place in the hearts of our innocent children.~teri:

First I would like to say I love all of everyones lyrics. They're awsome in every way. Teri I agree with you if you just sing it with love no matter if you know the lyrics or not something amazing will come to. I have my very own version as well of course. I have song it to all my boys (i have 3) and my only baby girl. They all love the song. Well here it is... Hush little baby don't say a word mamas gonna buy you a mockingbird and if that mockingbird don't sing mamas gonna buy you a diamond ring and if that diamond ring don't shine mamas gonna buy you a brand new chime and if that chime don't make a noise you like mamas gonna buy you a brand new bike and if that bike don't go fast enough (ok so it doesn't rhyme completly but it works) mamas gonna buy you a brand new kitty and if that kitty don't show you lots of love mamas gonna give you a big hug. Just show your love and it will shine through to make it a special song for your family.

I had a book called the moking bird and it went like this. hush little baby dont say a word, mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird, and if that mockingbird dont sing, papa's gonna buy you a garden swing, and if that garden swing gets stuck, polly's gonna buy you a pedal truck, and if that peddal truck trips over, rosie's gonna buy you a dog named rover, and if that dog named rover runs away, granny's gonna chase him if it takes all day, if it takes all day and starts to rain, mama's going to hurry you home again, she'll wipe your face and dry your hair, sit you up in your own high chair, tie your bib and forgoodness sake, papa's gone and baked you a birthday cake, tired little baby sleepy head, mama's gonna tuck you in your bed, close your eyes now now don't say a word, and maybe have a dream of a mockingbird.

My wife Jen and I sing this to our kids Briana and Kyle ages 5 and 2 and they love every version we make up as we go along! When singing them a lullaby song they just love being sung to no matter what pleasant words you add to any song or tune.

I knew someone who sang this to a cat. Altered lyrics - hush little baby, don't say a word, papas gonna buy you a mockingbird. And if that mockingbird don't sing, then we'll bite off his little wing. He went on, but can't remember the rest

Hush little baby don't you cry. Mama's going to sing you a lullaby. Sing you a lullaby so sweet you will close your eyes and sleep. Sleep little baby in my arms. Mama's going to keep you from all harm. Hush little baby don't you cry. Mama's going to sing you a lullaby.

I love this song. My mom sings it to my sister all and every night, but she never remembers the lyrics. Thank you so much.

I too love this song. I'm a 38 year old father of 6 and has been making up different lyrics to this song for years. It's nice to finally see the original lyrics. I always thought it said "hush little baby don't say a word, daddy's gonna buy you a mocking bird, and if that mocking bird don't sing, daddy's gonna buy you a diamond ring, and if that diamond ring don't shine"... After that I just start making up new lyrics. It's nice to know the original version now. Thank you all who have commented!

It's really great to hear about everyone's version of the lyrics. I sang and recorded the version in the embedded video above for my daughter and one of the nice things about the internet is being able to share music with others... Obviously, my version's an "amateur" one and my voice won't win any talent shows... but it's good to know some people are connecting with it in some way.
