Hush, Little Baby
Song Lyrics & Words
Hush, little baby, don't say a word,
Papa's gonna buy you a mockingbird.
And if that mockingbird don't sing,
Papa's gonna buy you a diamond ring.
And if that diamond ring turn brass,
Papa's gonna buy you a looking glass.
And if that looking glass gets broke,
Papa's gonna buy you a billy goat.
And if that billy goat don't pull,
Papa's gonna buy you a cart and bull.
And if that cart and bull turn over,
Papa's gonna buy you a dog named Rover.
And if that dog named Rover won't bark.
Papa's gonna to buy you and horse and cart.
And if that horse and cart fall down,
Well you'll still be the sweetest little baby in town.
Alternative Lyrics & Words
Another version goes like this
Hush little baby
don't say a word,
Mama's gonna buy you
a mocking bird,
If that mocking bird don't sing,
Mama's gonna buy you
a diamond ring,
If that diamond ring gets broke,
Mama's gonna buy you
a billy goat,
If that billy goat don't pull,
Mama's gonna buy you
a cart 'n bull,
If that cart 'n bull turn over,
Mama's gonna buy you
a dog named Rover,
If that dog named Rover
don't bark,
Mama's gonna buy you
a horse 'n cart,
Hush little baby don't say
a word,
Mama's gonna buy you
a mocking bird,
If that mocking bird don't sing,
Mama's gonna buy you
a diamond ring,
If that diamond ring don't shine,
Hush little baby don't you mind,
Cuz if that diamond ring
don't shine,
Mama's gonna love you
'til the end of time,
I'm always gonna love you
'til the end of time.
An interesting verse
And if that looking glass gets broke,
Papa's gonna buy you a Billy Goat,
And if that Billy goat runs away Papa's
gonna buy you a stack of hay,
If that stack of hay falls down, papa's gonna run you out of this
town.
Alternative Version
Hush little baby don't you cry
Papa's going to buy you an apple pie
If that apple pie turns sour
Papa's going to buy you a pretty flower
If that flower starts to fade
Papa's going to buy you some lemonade
If that lemonade's too cold
Papa's going to buy you a ring of gold
If that ring of gold rolls away
Papa's going to rock his baby all day
One More Versions
Hush little baby, don't say a word,
Momma's going to buy you a mocking bird.
If that mocking bird won't sing,
Momma's going buy you a dimond ring.
If that dimond ring turns brass,
Momma's going to buy you a looking glass.
If that looking glass gets broke,
Momma's going to buy you a billy goat.
If that billy goat gets bony.
Momma's going to buy you a shetland pony.
If that shetland pony runs away.
Momma's going to buy you another some day.

Thank you much for having this song. I have a new grandson who is 8 months old and I was trying to remember the words my Mother use to sing to me. I guess there were a lot of mothers that could not remember the exact words so they made up their own. But no matter it is nice to know that you can always find what you want on the internet.
By Damien in Montgomery, Al on 20 March 2009
Thanks for posting these words... I have been trying to remember the words and could only get as far as billy goat before I forgot the rest of the words... and i knew horse and cart came in sometime, but couldn't figure how to get to it. Oh and these are the real lyrics cassidy; just read The Dorling Kindersley Book of Nursery Rhymes (2000). Odds are your parents sang some other version because they could not remember all the words... there have been many alterations to this song because people forget and make up their own words and it is so easy to fit the meter.
By Colm in Ireland on 22 March 2009
great to find these lyrics again. Not all the words are the same as we remember but they are close enough for us to improvise...

These are the lyrics as I remember them: Hush little baby, don't say a word Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird. If that mockingbird won't sing Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring. And if that diamond ring turns brass Mama's gonna buy you a looking glass. If that looking glass should crack Mama's gonna buy you a jumping jack. And if that jumping jack won't hop Mama's gonna buy you a lollipop. When that lollipop is done Mama's gonna buy you another one. When that lollipop is all eaten up Mama's gonna buy you a little pup. If that little pup won't bark Mama's gonna buy you a horse and cart. And if that horse and cart fall down, You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town.

This is the only song that would ease my boys and now my grandchildren when they are in need of a nap or are upset. I tweek it a little, by singing "grandma" instead of "papa" and instead of "baby" I use their name. This helps for their little attention spans too I think!

On a road trip year's ago, my older daughter (then 11) & I wanted to sing this lullaby to my younger daughter (just a baby at the time). We couldn't remember all the words so we made them up as we went along. Our version turned out hilarious and we still sing it that way to this day. (My younger daughter is now 20) Hush little baby don't say a word, Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird. If that mockingbird won't sing, Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring. If that diamond ring don't shine, Mama's gonna buy you a copper mine. If that copper mine goes dry, Mama's gonna buy you an apple pie. If that apple pie is sour, Mama's gonna buy you a purple flower. If that purple flower wilts, Mama's gonna buy you a pair of stilts. If that pair of stilts is too tall, Mama's gonna buy you a rubber ball. If that rubber ball goes flat, Mama's gonna buy you a calico cat. If that calico cat won't purr, Mama's gonna buy you a coat of fur. If that coat of fur gets wet, Mama's gonna buy you a navy jet. If that navy jet goes down, Mama's gonna buy you a rodeo clown. If that rodeo clown's not funny, that's too bad 'cause Mom's outta money.
