I Know a Little Pussy

Lyrics

I know a little pussy
Her coat is silver grey
She lives down by the medow
Not very far away
She always be a pussy
She'll never be a cat
For shes a pussy willow
Now what do you think of that
Meow, meow, meow skat!

For those who don't realize, "puss" or "pussy" has long been a perfectly acceptable English term for kitten. This nursery rhyme is about a plant -Salix caprea- whose common name is Pussy Willow because the soft fuzzy catkins that bloom in late winter/early spring are similar to the soft fur of a grey kitten. Despite what the info says, the lyrics are an old poem; my mother taught me the rhyme in the 1950's and she learned it from her Mom in the early 1930's. I'd like to post a photo of the plant but I can't figure out how to do that on this comment board.

As a kid we sang this in preschool. Being 3, I also sang this wherever we went. However, I didn't remember all the words so I ended up just singing the first line repeatedly. Also our version was "I have". Mortification ensued. Poor Mom.
