I See The Moon

Information About I See The Moon

"I See the Moon" is an older classic lullaby that children love because of its gentle tune but also because they understand the relevance of being so far away from something they love.

The nursery rhyme is often found as the last rhyme in books for children.

There are several different variations of this song and many believe that it is a blessing.

Some have suggested that the meaning behind this rhyme is more sinister than charming such as to protect them from the dangers of the exposure to the moon and lunacy or to ward against evil creatures that walk in the light of the moon. The rhyme was aimed to teach the awareness of the moon and the prayer for a blessing from God.

Alternative Lyrics & Related Songs

You can choose to sing only the 1st verse

I see the moon,
And the moon sees me.
God Bless the moon,
And God bless me.

These 2 verses are slightly different

I see the moon
And the moon sees me
The moon sees the somebody
I would like to see

God bless the moon
And God bless me
God bless the somebody
I would like to see

We have another version here

I see the moon, the moon sees me,
Up in the arms of the old oak tree
Please let the light that shines on me,
Shine on the one I love.

Over the mountains, Over the sea,
Back where my heart is longing to be
Please let the light that shines on me,
Shine on the one I love.

My mom is now singing this old song to my three sons and my youngest has a real love of singing and is fascinated by the moon. He's three and though I'm a 40 year old man, tears come to my eyes whenever I hear him sing it. We had quite a scare with him earlier this year. Emergency heart surgery. Beautiful song. The version we sing is about longing to be with the ones you love, but even if you're not, wanting the moons light to shine on them. Not only to bless them, but to feel a sense of togetherness with those you love by being in the light of the same moon.

I love singing this song to my grandson. I SEE THE MOON THE MOON SEES ME, DOWN THRU THE LEAVES OF THE OLD OAK TREE. PLEASE LET THE LIGHT THAT SHINES ON ME SHINE TO THE ONE I LOVE. There are many versions, but this one is my favorite. My mom used to sing it to me. I am now 60+ years old

I agree with Paula... and it continues with a bridge "Over the mountains, over the sea, there's where my heart is longing to be. Please let the light that shines on me, shine on the one I love." I think it was an old war song.

I remember the lyrics as: I see the moon, the moon sees me down thru the leaves of the old oak tree. Please let the light that shines on me shine on the one I love.

I see the Moon, The Moon sees me, The Moon sees the one I long to see, So God Bless the Moon, And God Bless me, And God Bless the one th I long to see. I had a Heart forever true, But it left me and went to you, So keep it safe as I have done, For you have two and I have none.
