I'm a Little Teapot

Song Video

I'm a little teapot
Short and stout
Here is my handle
Here is my spout.

When I get all steamed up
Hear me shout
"Tip me over
and pour me out!'.

Information About I'm a Little Teapot

The origins of "I'm a Little Tea Pot" came about when Clarence Kelley was teaching children how to do the Waltz Clog, which is a popular tap dance routine. The children had a hard time learning the dance, so he created "The Teapot Song". This song allowed the children to enjoy both the performing of the action and the song. Making the Teapot song very popular.

The melody of the song is very upbeat, and the lyrics blend together with rhythmically.

"I'm a Little Tea Pot" was published in 1939, and originally written by George Harold Sanders and Clarence Z. Kelley. Betty Harris later did a different version of the song and added extra lyrics. It wasn't until the early 1950's that the song was recorded.

The lyrics of the song tell about a tea kettle, and what it does when it heats up. "When I get all steamed up, hear me shout!' This is when the kettle becomes warm and makes the whistling sound to release the trapped steam within the kettle.

This song is sung by children throughout the United States, and has been seen in various TV shows and movies.

A few movies based on novels by Stephen King have featured the song such as the movie "Rose Red".

I'm a Little Teapot" is a well-known children's nursery rhyme about a boiling pot of tea. Many kindergarten schools, pre-nursery & nursery schools teach children the lyrics to this song.

The Words & Music were written by Clarence Kelley and Geo. H. Sanders in New York, 1939.

Printed in Canada by Gordon V. Thompson Ltd. by arrangement with Kelman Music Corporation: New York, NY. Copyright 1941 by Kelman Music Corp, 1674 Broadway, New York City.

Alternative Lyrics & Related Songs

Continue singing this version for some tea

I'm a little tea pot
Short and stout
Here is my handle
Here is my spout.

When you see the tea cup
Hear me shout
Tip me over
Pour me out!

I'm a little sugarbowl!

I'm a little teapot short and stout,
here is my handle
here is my spout
I'm a sugar bowl!

A much shorter version

I am Teapot. I am a teapot
This my handle
This is my mouth
I pour every cup
I pour every cup.

What I Can Do version

I'm a little teapot
yes it's true
just watch me and
I'll show you what I can do.

I can change my handle
and my spout
just tip me over and
pour me out.

I'm a tube of toothpaste!

I'm a tube of toothpaste
on the shelf.
I get so lonesome
all by myself.
When it comes to night time,
then I shout.
Pull the lid off,
squeeze me out.

Additional single verse

When the kettle boils
Hear me shout
"Tip me over
And pour me out!'.

This is the version you can eat cookies to

I'm a little tea cup nice and round
Fill me up and drink me down.
Put a little honey in your tea,
Then just take a sip from me.

I'm a little cookie, nice and brown
Chew me up and swallow me down
I'm a little crummy, that's just me,
And I taste good with your cup of tea.
