It Was On A Starry Night
It was on a starry night
When the hills were bright,
Earth lay sleeping, sleeping calm and still.
Then in a cattle shed,
In a manger bed,
A boy was born, King of all the world.
CHORUS
And all the angels sang for Him,
The bells of heaven rang for Him,
For a boy was born, King of all the world.
And all the angels sang for Him,
The bells of heaven rang for Him,
For a boy was born, King of all the world.
Soon the shepherds came that way
Where the baby lay
And were kneeling, kneeling by His side.
And their hearts believed again
For the peace of men,
For a boy was born, King of all the world.
CHORUS
Information About It Was On A Starry Night
It was on a starry night is a Christmas carol originally written by Joy Webb. She was a member of the Joy Strings, a 1960’s Salvation Army music group.
The song was first released in 1964 and peaked on the United Kingdom music chart at number 34.
Since then, the song is regularly performed by choirs and music groups all around the world, especially during Christmas.
The lyrics typically refer to the happenings of Christmas day. “It was on a starry night when the hills were bright, Earth lay sleeping, sleeping calm and still. Then in a cattle shed, in a manger bed a boy was born, king of the entire world.”

in the 'post a comment' box could you make the sums that are used to exclude computer replies are ones without reversable numbers ie NOT 2 plus 5? It says ['it is a simple test to ensure you're a human' but my daughter with dyslexia is a human too and she may read this as 2+2 or 5+5 !

By Morven from United Kingdom on 19 March 2012
I really love this song. We don't sing Christmas songs at my senior school (I'm in Year 8), so when I do sing this, it's when I'm alone, because I'm too embarrassed to sing in front of anyone. Does anyone else here love Star Wars like me?
By Morven from United Kingdom on 20 March 2012
I remember when I was still in junior school (I think it was Year 5), and we were singing this, and we had just finished the line 'The bells of Heaven rang for Him' when the school bell went! Everyone laughed.
By Athena from Canada on 16 October 2012
It don't have the whole song. It is " and the wise men from afar, guided by a star. Came to worship, worship Christ The Lord, they brought to offer him, tis their newborn king, a child was born, king of all the world." Do ya it is after the chorus the second time :)
By Tina from United Kingdom on 29 October 2012
My choir sings this in our Christmas repetoire but we did not have the second verse. It is a beautiful carol and we all love its joyfulness. We will enjoy it more now.

I am American and lived in England from 2000-2003. My children sang this song at the local village school in East Leake, Loughborough, and I've always loved it and remembered it fondly. I am delighted to see the lyrics here. I still drive my kids crazy singing it during the holidays and wish American kids routinely learned this song. Merry Christmas to all!
