Lincoln Lincoln

Lincoln, Lincoln
I've been thinkin'
What on Earth
Have you been drinkin'?
Tastes like whiskey,
Smells like wine,
Oh my gosh,
It's turpentine!

Information About Lincoln Lincoln

This is a "jump rope" song. Kids would jump over rope in the playground to this song.

A BuSongs fan named James wrote us an email to provide this historical note about the song: I first heard this jump rope rhyme in central Wisconsin around 1950, with "Hitler" substituted for "Lincoln". I don't know how widespread this usage was during and after WWII. One other memory of this rhyme: it was followed by the question "How many minutes will he live?', then a count of how many times the jumper could skip without missing. Very interesting James - thanks for writing in and sharing this with us!

I'm in my 70's and I was taught the words to this song by my grandmother. Lincoln, Lincoln I'm been thinking what a great world this would be if all the girls where transported far beyond the deep blue sea.

Interesting stuff from my trans-Atlantic brothers and sisters - particularly the differences according to regionality. I just like the song. But here's a rhyme/tongue-twister from jolly ol' England: I'm not a pheasant-plucker, but a pheasant-plucker's son and I'll be pluckin' pheasants till the pheasant-plucker comes.

I'm pretty old, but when I lived in New Jersey or Philadelphia around 1965, it was: Lincoln Lincoln I've been thinkin' What a great world this would be, If the girls were all transported And the boys were sent to sea

They are NOT the correct lyrics, It's actually: Lincoln, Lincoln, I've been thinking, What the hell have you been drinking? Is it water, Is it wine, Oh my god it's turpentine
