Lincoln Lincoln

Information About Lincoln Lincoln

This is a "jump rope" song. Kids would jump over rope in the playground to this song.

A BuSongs fan named James wrote us an email to provide this historical note about the song: I first heard this jump rope rhyme in central Wisconsin around 1950, with "Hitler" substituted for "Lincoln". I don't know how widespread this usage was during and after WWII. One other memory of this rhyme: it was followed by the question "How many minutes will he live?', then a count of how many times the jumper could skip without missing. Very interesting James - thanks for writing in and sharing this with us!

There's a good book of "kids" rhymes called: "Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts"

Lincoln Lincoln I've been thinking what the hell have you been drinking. Looks like whiskey, tastes like wine, oh my God it's turpentine!

Wrong wrong! It's Lincoln Lincoln I've been thinking, you've been down the cellar drinking. Was it whiskey, was it wine? Oh my gosh it's turpentine!
