I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts

Song Video

Lyrics

I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts.

Down at the county fair
One evening I was there
I heard a barker shouting
Underneath the flair. .

"Oh, I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts.
There they are all standing in a row.
Big ones, small ones, some as big as your head.
Give 'em a twist, a flick of the wrist".
That's what the showman said.

Oi! I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts.
Every ball you throw will make me rich.
There stands me wife,
The idol of me life,
Singing roll a bowl, a ball, a penny a pitch.

Singing, roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch.
Roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch.
Roll a bowl a ball.
Roll a bowl a ball.
Singing, roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch.

Information About I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts

I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts was written in 1944 by the English songwriter Fred Heatherton. Originally spelled 'Cocoanuts', it is a novelty song celebrating the coconut shy (coconut toss) at funfairs.

In 1949 is was a top ten US hit for Freddy Martin and His Orchestra, with Merv Griffin as the vocalist. The following year, it put singer Danny Kaye at number 25.

The song was a stapel on the British radio and TV program The Billy Cotton Band Show. In fact, it is still played over the stadium sound system after a home win for Cambridge United. It is also used as a victory song, sung in the dressing room, after a win by the Palm Tree Cricket Club.

It has been used in several movies, including the Disney films 'The Lion King' and 'Jungle Book'. It was also used in a skit by the British comedy troupe Monty Python. Intrigued? Look for other silly songs to sing here.

The lyrics are spot on except for the chorus. It makes more sense when you think about it - it's "roll up, bowl a ball - a penny a pitch." "Roll up" means "all gather round," which the showman wants. Change this and ye'll be the ONLY lyric site w the right words! ;)

LOL. I had never heard the whole song. My three year old loves for me to sing Zazu's part ( with the accent of course). He gets such a kick out of it - it really takes me to a happy place!
