Information About I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts
I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts was written in 1944 by the English songwriter Fred Heatherton. Originally spelled 'Cocoanuts', it is a novelty song celebrating the coconut shy (coconut toss) at funfairs.
In 1949 is was a top ten US hit for Freddy Martin and His Orchestra, with Merv Griffin as the vocalist. The following year, it put singer Danny Kaye at number 25.
The song was a stapel on the British radio and TV program The Billy Cotton Band Show. In fact, it is still played over the stadium sound system after a home win for Cambridge United. It is also used as a victory song, sung in the dressing room, after a win by the Palm Tree Cricket Club.
It has been used in several movies, including the Disney films 'The Lion King' and 'Jungle Book'. It was also used in a skit by the British comedy troupe Monty Python. Intrigued? Look for other silly songs to sing here.
