Lullaby And Goodnight

Information About Lullaby And Goodnight

In 1849 Georg Sherer wrote the second verse, which Brahms later included in the song. The lullaby was a gift for his friend Bertha Faber's newborn son Hans. She was also the first to perform the song.

The melody that Brahms' wrote is known in English as 'Good evening, Good night'. It has been used in many other lullabies. making it one of the most recognizable tunes in the world. It is most commonly used in mobiles and swings that play music to soothe babies.

Some words are different in this version

Lullaby and goodnight
With roses bedight;
With lilies bedecked
Is baby's wee bed.

Lay thee down now and rest;
May thy slumber be blest.
Lay thee down now and rest;
May thy slumber be blest.

This is the German version

Guten Abend, gute Nacht!
Mit Rosen bedacht,
Mit Näglein besteckt
Schlupf' unter die Deck'.

Guten Abend, gute Nacht!
Mit Rosen bedacht,
Mit Näglein besteckt
Schlupf' unter die Deck'.

Morgen früh, wenn Gott will,
Wirst du wieder geweckt.
Morgen früh, wenn Gott will,
Wirst du wieder geweckt.

Guten Abend, gute Nacht,
Von Englein bewacht,
Die zeigen im Traum,
Dir Christkindleins Baum.

Schlaf nun selig und süß,
Schau im Traum's Paradies,
Schlaf nun selig und süß,
Schau im Traum's Paradies.
