Monkey and Chimp (Abba dabba dabba)
Song Lyrics & Words
Way down in the congo land sitting in a coconut tree,
there was a monkey and a chimp--and Lordy how she loved him.
Everynight in the pale moonlight sitting in the coconut tree,
these love words she always said to he...
"Abba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba"
said the monkey to the chimp.
"Abba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba"
said the chimpee to the monk.
All night long they chattered away.
All day long they were happy and gay,
swinging and swaying in a honky, tonky way.
"Abba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba"
said the chimp, "I love but you."
Abba dabba dabba in monkey talk means
"Chimp, I love you too."
Then the ol' baboon, one night in June,
married them and very soon,
they sailed away on an abba dabba honeymoon.

My dad used to sing this when I still lived at home. Now that my 13-year-old son has developed a keen interest in primates, this song will enjoy a revival in our household!

I've been singing this song, out of the blue, but couldn't remember all the words, and my husband thought I made it up! Now I can sing it all to him, and to the grandsons too!

ditto to all the previous comments. I'm over the moon to read comments that have been running thru my head since trying to remember all the words that my mum use to sing when I was a kid (I'm now 60). Now I can sing it to my grandkids.

My mother used to sing this and all I could remember was the first line of the chorus. Mom is in a nursing home with Alzheimer's and I've sung that one line and she relates to it. Can't wait to sing the entire song and see her reaction! The other song I do remember the words to is School Days, School Days, Dear old golden rule days.........

I've been singing this song since I heard my mom sing it to me 60 years ago but never knew all the words. What a thrill to check onto the internet and find all the words--now I can sing the RIGHT words to my grandchildren to keep the cycle of fun going. Thanks!
