Information About My Country 'tis Of Thee

"My Country, "Tis of Thee" is also known as "America". It is an American patriotic song and was used as a de facto national anthem during the 19th century before the adoption of "The Star-Spangled Banner". If the melody sounds familiar that's because it was taken from the British national anthem "God Save The Queen".

The lyrics for "My Country "tis Of Thee" were written in 1850 by Samuel Joe Smith and the complete song was first performed in public on July 4, 1831.

The song was sung by Aretha Franklin at the inauguration of President Barack Obama on January 20th 2009.

I too remember after the Pledge of Allegiance and morning prayer. I can remember getting very choked up and crying every time I heard or sang this beautiful song as a young kid in school. I find it shameful that children today don't even know this song...

This is one of the best songs about our nation. As to that disclaimer.... My 10 year old says "If your offended by this song find another country to live in." Some people need to stop being so sensitive.

I have always loved this!, but what is the disclaimer all about? If some people are so sensitive that they are offended by this song then they realy need to get some sort of counseling.

Wow! I remember singing this song, after "Pledging" my "Allegiance to the Flag" and before our "Moment of Silence." :)
