Lyrics

Peter, Peter, Pumpkin-eater

Peter, Peter, pumpkin-eater,
Had a wife and couldn't keep her;
He put her in a pumpkin shell,
And there he kept her very well.

Information About Peter, Peter, Pumpkin-eater

The first recorded version of the rhyme "Peter, Peter, Pumpkin-eater" was published in "Mother Goose's Quarto: or Melodies Complete", in America around 1825. However, an old Scottish verse, collected in 1868, had very similar words but didn't make any reference to pumpkins; suggesting that the verse we know today was adapted to include pumpkins once it reached America.

There is also a strong resemblance between "Peter, Peter, Pumpkin-eater" and "Eeper Weeper"; a later version dating perhaps from the early 19th century.
