Information About Puff the Magic Dragon

Peter Yarrow and Leonard Lipton wrote the song "Puff, the Magic Dragon" which was then recorded in 1963 by the group Peter, Paul and Mary.

Leonard Lipton was influenced by a poem by Ogden Nash called 'Custard the Dragon", when as a 19-year-old Cornell student he wrote the lyrics of a song that was to eventually become 'Puff the Magic Dragon'.

The lyrics speak about the fantastic adventures of an ageless dragon named Puff and a young boy called Jackie Paper. When Jackie grows up he loses interest in the adventures of childhood and thereafter leaves Puff depressed and lonely. The story takes place in the imaginary "land called honah lee".

I really love this song, during that time my mom was singing the song to me, I was really happy that time and played the song 10 times everyday... Memories of childhood.. Thanks Puff for everything.. Now that all the kids grew up.. they will never forget you as an Ageless dragon.. My childhood was magical that time.. thanks to Puff.

I have loved this song since I was a little girl; I'll be 47 yrs old on the 15th of this month and I still love the song. I decided to look up the actual lyrics to the song because over the years I'd forgotten some of them. I remember when I was little how I always use to cry whenever the last two verses were sung; the ones about Jackie Paper growing up and no longer needing his friend Puff, and about Puff being so sad that he never came out of his cave again. As young as I was at the time I first heard this song I decided that I'd pretend Jackie Paper grew up, had a family of his own, and then introduced his children to Puff the Magic Dragon. They introduced their children, and so on, and so on. Puff was never again lonely or alone. What a beautifully happy ending to a wonderful song and story. If I'm not mistaken, I think the song was actually made into a children's movie special or cartoon, and written as a story in a book as well.

My favorite childhood song, that my dad would sing to me (Tumbleweed). I spent hours listening to him sing and loving every minute of it. I am now a grandmother too a 3 year old, Maddison. I have taught her to sing Puff, the first verse and chorus. When Great Grandpa and GG comes to visit Maddy. We are going to sing this to my dearest Dad.
