Skin And Bones

There was an old woman all skin and bones, O-o-o-o!
She lived down by the old graveyard -o-o-o!
One night she thought she'd take a walk, -o-o-o!
She walked down by the old graveyard, o-o-o!
She saw the bones a-layinâ around, O-o-o-o!
She thought sheâd sweep the old church house, O-o-o-o!
She went to the closet to get a broom, O-o-o-o!
She opened the door and BOO!

I kept wondering how people were getting alopecia from the lyrics until it dawned on me that some people don't know that the phrase "skin and bones" means frail and thin. It has nothing to do with hair loss... Maybe I only knew that because it's used frequently in the south, where I grew up, but either way I thought I'd at least try to clear up the confusion. As for the eating disorder bit, I can't comment.

Learned this song when I was 5. Thought I would find the lyrics again. People who think that this is offensive are looking into it too hard. Of course there is always something that can be associated with anything that isn't normal. From me when I was a child, (who it was intended for might I add), I loved it. Stop trying to turn am old nursery rhyme into something potentially evil. That is the problem with America now. Everyone always assuming and judging. Kinda pathetic.

This song is very inappropriate. For it scares children and can be offensive to old ladies that have an eating disorder and allopecia. like devin united states said

I feel like this song may be slightly inappropriate for children to be singing. For all we know this poor old woman may have an eating disorder and possibly allopecia. There is no need to objectify her in such a fashion.

I love this song. My music teacher taught me this song yesterday. She didn't scare me at the end of the song when it said BOO!

I remember singing this is music class when I was like 3rd grade! My music teacher did this song with us from like 1st grade to 3rd grade, it was funny because she jumped at us when we all said BOO! We even made her "Which's Brew in music class as we sang :D! We all brought something to add to it, I remember bringing raisins, lol, and we made a big bowl of "Which's Brew" trail mix and all of us in the class got a big ziploc baggie full of it to take back to class with us, what great memories one kiddie song can bring back!!

I have used this song with 1st -3rd grade nearly every year since 1983 and I practically never repeat any other song. Drama possibilities are amazing. I prefer the line"She went to the closet to get a broom" because her intentions can be mysterious and lead to discussion. Music teacher since 1983
