Sleep Baby Sleep

Song Video

Lyrics

Sleep, baby, sleep,
Thy papa guards the sheep;
Thy mama shakes the dreamland tree
And from it fall sweet dreams for thee,
Sleep, baby, sleep,.

Sleep, baby, sleep,
Our cottage vale is deep;
The little lamb is on the green,
With woolly fleece so soft and clean,
Sleep, baby, sleep,.

Sleep, baby, sleep,
Down where the woodbines creep;
Be always like the lamb so mild,
A kind and sweet and gentle child,
Sleep, baby, sleep,.

And do not cause my bairn to wake
Sleep, baby sleep.

Yes, I learned this song in German too from my mother. I was hoping they would have the full length german version on this website as well, as I don't remember all the lyrics. I remember my mother singing it with the words: Schlaf Kindlein Schlaf (rather than Kindchen)

I learned this song in German when I was a child, and didn't even know there was an english language version. I think it may have been the original, because it flows just a little bit more gently and I think the old fashioned words are in the English version (thy) to fit the words to the lyrics. Obviously I may be wrong, but does anyone else know "Schlaf, Kindchen, Schlaf"? Schlaf, Kindchen, schlaf, Der Vater huet die Schaf, Die Mutter in dem Baeumelein, Sie schuettelt dir die Traeume ein, Schlaf, Kindchen, Schlaf.
