There Was An Old Woman Tossed Up In A Basket

Song Lyrics & Words

There was an old woman tossed up in a blanket
Seventeen times as high as the moon.
But where she was going, no mortal could tell it,
For under her arm, she carried a broom.
"Old woman, old woman, old woman," quoth I,
"Whither, ah whither, ah whither so high?"
"To sweep the cobwebs from the sky."
"May I come with you?"
"Aye, by and by."

Alternative Lyrics & Words

There was an old woman tossed up in a basket
Ninety-nine times as high as the moon.
What she did there I could not but ask it
For in each hand she carried a broom.

"Old woman, old woman, old woman," said I
"Where are you going to up so high?"
"To sweep the cobwebs from the sky
And you may come with me if you can fly."

The book of Zechariah in the bible, chapter 5, talks of a woman or women being taken up high in a basket. I suspect this must figure as a source for this rhyme.
