This is My Country
With hand upon my heart I thank the Lord for this, my native land.
For all I love is here within her gates.
My soul is rooted deeply in the soil on which I stand,
For these are mine, my own United States!
This is my country! Land of my birth!
This is my country! Grandest on earth!
I pledge thee my allegiance, America, the bold,
For this is my country to have and to hold.
This is my country! Land of my choice!
This is my country! Hear my proud voice!
I pledge thee my allegiance, America, the bold,
For this is my country to have and to hold.

In 1948 I learned this song with different opening lines. It was: "Breathes there a man with soul so dead who never to himself has said This is my own my native land, this is my native land. This is my country! Land of my birth! ....

I woke up today trying to remember a song that we once sang in college choir. How I would love to hear a local church choir sing THIS IS MY COUNTRY on this July 4th, 2011. I think America needs to sing once more the message of pride in being a citizen of this great land.

Its around 1946 or 1947, i 'm in the second grade and miss blake, ex. Wave, is my teacher. God bless her but i loved her so much. She taught us , " god bless america", "its a grand old flag" and "this is my country". Wow. How i miss those good patriatic songs! Nobody sings them anymore today and i feel they should be taught k--12 in schools. I don"t care if its politically incorrect. This is my country and not the politicians. God bless america.

I am a music teacher at a parochial school and we have an annual fiesta coming up in October. This years theme is God Bless America in honor of the tenth anniversary of 9-11-2001. This song came to me the other night when I was thinking of songs to have the children, grades K-8 sing. I learned it in grade school and it's one you seldom hear sung anymore. We will be singing it at the fiesta this year. I am very excited about finding it and thank you for the lyrics.

Just a post script to my above comments....I am also an extremely patriotic American. I believe in my country and do not like the fact that the children of today, do not seem to have the love of country that I was brought up with. I teach that love whenever I can, in song and in the pledge, and with my husband teaching along side me....we are retired from other positions and this is part-time, we hope to instill a love of our country in these children. They seem to love all songs, especially the young ones, so I feel there is hope. God bless America. Never forget 9-11-2001.

I am a proud American, born and bred in this country, which I love and would die for if need be. However, every day the country that I love is slipping away, and when this song was written, we sang it in school, regularly. This song and all the other patriotic songs. God help us, as we lose the freedom we knew as children, our children and grandchildren and indeed great grandchildren will never know those grand days of my childhood.
