You Are My Sunshine

You Are My Sunshine Lyrics

You Are My Sunshine
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away

The other nite, dear,
As I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms.
When I awoke, dear,
I was mistaken
And I hung my head and cried.

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.

I'll always love you
And make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if you leave me
To love another
You'll regret it all some day;

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.

You told me once, dear
You really loved me
And no one else could come between
But now you've left me
And love another
You have shattered all my dreams;

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.

Louisiana my Louisiana
the place where I was borne.
White fields of cotton
-- green fields clover,
the best fishing
and long tall corn;

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.
Crawfish gumbo and jambalaya
the biggest shrimp and sugar cane,
the finest oysters
and sweet strawberries
from Toledo Bend to New Orleans;

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.

The other night dear, as I lay sleeping

But when I woke dear

You never know dear how much i love you

If you will only same the same
But leave me and love another
And you'll regret it all someday

You are my sunshine my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You never know dear how much i love you
So please don't take my sunshine away

In my dreams dear, you seem to leave me
When i awake my poor heart pains
So when you come back and make me happy
I'll forgive you dear,i'll take the blame

You are my sunshine my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You never know dear how much i love you
So please don't take my sunshine away

I like this song a great deal.. i look for philosophical value in all songs, as well as things i can relate to, this has both. In fact.. I'm sure everybody can relate to this song, it almost makes me tear up.. I like the audio on this site, at the end where "please don't take my sunshine away" it ends the song abruptly, instead of drawing out the last syllable like i've always done... I don't know why, but that sends a shiver down my spine.

I really do think this is a cute song for children. Well at least the Chorus is. I never knew there was more to the song. Although the rest of the song is good to I think I'll stick to singing just the Chorus. I don't exactly agree that the lines "But if you leave me To love another You'll regret it all some day" and "I hung my head and cried." should be in a childrens song.

I love this song, but I have always just sung the chorus. I decided to look up the words to the verses after one of my preschoolers came in singing them . . . at first I didn't believe that the words I could make out (then I hung my head and cried) were part of the song. Guess they are. Her act will still make me laugh though, in spite of the depressing lyrics, because she gets really theatrical about "hung my head and cried" and it's just so out of character for her.

Interesting that the lyrics are so appropriate and fitting to what has gone on in my life recently. The words are more fitting than any modern songs. When I was young, my family used to sing a lot together, and this was one of our favorite songs. My dad and I would usually sing harmony while my mom and my younger sister would sing the melody. I went to a play the other night that my grandson and granddaughter were in and they played this song during intermission (that version was from the soundtrack of Oh brother, where art thou" I think). Whenever I hear it, I remember the good times of singing with my family (both of my parents are gone now), so I just taught myself to play it on my harmonica. I'm 68 now and still love this song (in spite of the sad words).

I grew up with my grandmother always singing this song to all of her grandkids (and to her cats, lol) and when I had my first child I sang it to him and rocked him for what felt like hours to get him to sleep. When my second child came along and he was 3 he asked very nicely if I could only sing it to him because "That's our special song." and I couldn't say no. Now that he's 6 he will love learning the rest of the lyrics (which I had forgotten about when he was a baby), thank you so much for putting them all on here.

My mother sang it to all five of her kids, and all 12 of her grand children. She had 22 great grandchildren, not getting the chance to sing it to all of them, but would have, had she had the chance. We lost her 1 year ago and at her funeral all her grandchildren recieted it for her. Very emotional and touching.
