You Are My Sunshine
You Are My Sunshine
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away
The other nite, dear,
As I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms.
When I awoke, dear,
I was mistaken
And I hung my head and cried.
You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.
I'll always love you
And make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if you leave me
To love another
You'll regret it all some day;
You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.
You told me once, dear
You really loved me
And no one else could come between
But now you've left me
And love another
You have shattered all my dreams;
You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.
Louisiana my Louisiana
the place where I was borne.
White fields of cotton
-- green fields clover,
the best fishing
and long tall corn;
You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.
Crawfish gumbo and jambalaya
the biggest shrimp and sugar cane,
the finest oysters
and sweet strawberries
from Toledo Bend to New Orleans;
You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.

I like this song a great deal.. i look for philosophical value in all songs, as well as things i can relate to, this has both. In fact.. I'm sure everybody can relate to this song, it almost makes me tear up.. I like the audio on this site, at the end where "please don't take my sunshine away" it ends the song abruptly, instead of drawing out the last syllable like i've always done... I don't know why, but that sends a shiver down my spine.
By Tori from Round Rock U.s on 11 April 2009

I really do think this is a cute song for children. Well at least the Chorus is. I never knew there was more to the song. Although the rest of the song is good to I think I'll stick to singing just the Chorus. I don't exactly agree that the lines "But if you leave me To love another You'll regret it all some day" and "I hung my head and cried." should be in a childrens song.
By Nicole from Long Iland on 22 April 2009

I love singing this song to my little sunshine Lukas. He is 5 month old now. When he´s crying and I sing the chorous, he often stops and laughs. I didn´t know, that this song is one of Louisianas state songs. Thanks Louisiana for bringing sunshine to my little german boy! :)
By Bethany from Iowa City, Iowa on 7 June 2009
I love this song, but I have always just sung the chorus. I decided to look up the words to the verses after one of my preschoolers came in singing them . . . at first I didn't believe that the words I could make out (then I hung my head and cried) were part of the song. Guess they are. Her act will still make me laugh though, in spite of the depressing lyrics, because she gets really theatrical about "hung my head and cried" and it's just so out of character for her.
By Melody from Poland on 9 June 2009
My mum sang this to me as a small child, now i'm 13. I sing the chorus to my cousin who is 3 years old, and it always makes her fall asleep. My cousin has down syndrom, and two holes in her heart. So when I sing "Please don't take my sunshine away" It always means I don't want her to Die.

I sing this to my grandson, 4 years old every night and he always goes to sleep. I can't sing, but at first I did wonder if he went right to sleep to keep from hearing me sing. After many months of this routine I truly believe he just loves the song as much as I did when I was a little girl. Anyway , it really does seem to relax him enough to go right to sleep.

By Terri from Gates, Nc on 23 March 2010
Wow. I have always loved this song, but I never knew the rest of the lyrics and that they had so much meaning. I only remember the chorus. Interesting that the lyrics are so appropriate and fitting to what has gone on in my life recently. The words are more fitting than any modern songs. My loved one did not leave me permanently, but he almost did and things have been tough. Hopefully they will be better than before now that we have reconciled. Now I can hum the chorus as a happy tune!
By Katherine from Burlington, Usa on 24 March 2010

I absolutely love this song. I never new the entire song just the chorus of which I sing to my children 4, 8, & 10 when we go to sleep at night. My mother sang it to us as children and to her younger siblings.. I needed to know the words because my sister couldn't finish it @ my moms' grave sight and now I know why, it's kinda sad, I dreamt I held you in my arms. When I awoke dear, I was mistaken, So I hung my head and cried. Miss you MOMMY.

This song is just so beautiful and melodic. I used to sing it to my baby girl while changing her diapers. She always hated changing diapers but the moment I started singing, she stopped crying. It worked every time. I agree that the lyrics aren't for children, but I have edited the parts that I consider not children-friendly. This song is a must in my home.

By Leyla from France on 10 September 2010
Sorry for my english. My mother sang it to me when I was child. It's an American soldier come to France during the second world war wich had taught it to her. It always sang it with much emotion. She now died. And I am moved to have fond this song of wich I did not know the title. I finally could listen to it again; thanks to internet. I regret not having put questions with my mother about this relation with this soldier. It was to be very a good memory because its face was illuminated when she sang this song! Thanks to this soldier and this song to have made happy, even a moment, my mother.

This song was sang to me as a child and I plan on singing it to my baby when he is born. I don't seem to remember the lyrics being so depressing, but we can just skip that part for the baby.
By Jerome Zaha from Aurora Il Usa on 24 September 2010
I agree with all. Its good for children, but not. Its good music. And tells of a simpler time. Be honest. Those of you who had/have great parents, how many others have you loved that you regretted? I heard the first verse and chorus as a baby. I just found out there were more lyrics from the one season wonder miracles from abc on dvd. My mom didnt know they were original lyrics. The regretting part.

When I was young, my family used to sing a lot together, and this was one of our favorite songs. My dad and I would usually sing harmony while my mom and my younger sister would sing the melody. I went to a play the other night that my grandson and granddaughter were in and they played this song during intermission (that version was from the soundtrack of Oh brother, where art thou" I think). Whenever I hear it, I remember the good times of singing with my family (both of my parents are gone now), so I just taught myself to play it on my harmonica. I'm 68 now and still love this song (in spite of the sad words).

I grew up with my grandmother always singing this song to all of her grandkids (and to her cats, lol) and when I had my first child I sang it to him and rocked him for what felt like hours to get him to sleep. When my second child came along and he was 3 he asked very nicely if I could only sing it to him because "That's our special song." and I couldn't say no. Now that he's 6 he will love learning the rest of the lyrics (which I had forgotten about when he was a baby), thank you so much for putting them all on here.

By Sami from United States on 12 May 2011
I have always loved this song (I didn't know there was more than just the first verse). I learned it years ago at Girl Scout camp, and I was also taught the "mix it up" version: You are my everlasting baby you are my everything you make me oh so very happy when skies are grey and by the way, you'll never know how much I love you, how much I miss you when you're gone. So please don't take (don't take) my sunshine away.
By Jada from United States on 17 May 2011
I love this song. Love the audio too. I don't think you shouldn't sing the whole song to kids. When I was little those were the songs that taught me how not to do very bad things to people. I sung the chorus of this song in pre school for my graduation. My mom still has it on video. This song has a a pretty tune.

By Elly from United States on 21 August 2011
I'm 12, and my mom used to sing the first verse to me every night before bed. I remembered hearing something from an old friend that there was more to the song than just the traditional "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are grey, you'll never know dear, how much I love you, please don't take my sunshine away." So I looked it up and found this. And just... Wow. There's so much more to it than I thought.

Another AMAZING song that I remember.
By Wow from United States on 21 November 2011
Wow @ "Summer Lee". That's a very touching story. Something about this song, I think that it uses a "Minor" key, makes it so very bittersweet. It expresses deep love at the same time as it expresses sadness/loss. Like, all good things must come to an end, but love can go on forever.
By Song Origin from United States on 21 November 2011
Wait, I noticed that this site is missing some significant information about this song: It was originally a Ukrainian folk tune "Oh, there up on the mountain." The lyrics were changed and it become the song "You are My Sunshine" to the English-speaking world.

It really is amazing how people ignore the meaning of what they sing to their children - this is a great song to be sure but it is a sad song speaking of a jilted lover. Using this song to express your love to your child is as creepy as using Every Breath You Take to express love to your girlfriend.
By Mignon from South Africa on 2 January 2012

I have always sung the chorus to my kids and grandkids and got curious what the words to the rest of the song were. I was surprised it goes from beloved sweet lyrics to a depressing break up song and then turns into a Lousiana state travel commercial, odd. Some things better not knowing.

I was born in May of 1950 in Connecticut... I remember this was the very First song I learned to sing when I was about four years old. My mother taught me & I remember she was so proud that she would have me sing it where ever we went. As the many years passed, I use to cry when I heard this song; remembering the wonderful times of days gone by. So happy to know so many know of this wonderful song today. It truly brings back many memories. I have been blessed with my 'first grandchild' this past year & hope he will learn to sing this song as the years come, & hope it brings him good memories as the years pass. I do hope 'You Are My Sunshine' stays in the hearts of you all. ~~~: )

By Rodger from United States on 14 April 2012
My mother always sang this song to me at bedtime and another called The Tennessee Waltz. Both must have been popular when I was a child (now 65). Still love both songs but they are melancholy. Sort of surprised the song is still around in a current commercial. But my wife did find a stuffed giraffe for our grandson which plays You are my Sunshine.
By Bonnie Moon from United States on 22 April 2012
What a special song this is to all our family. My mother and her sibblings lost their Mother when they were very young. This was one of the few songs they all remembered her singing to them. My mother sang it to all five of her kids, and all 12 of her grand children. She had 22 great grandchildren, not getting the chance to sing it to all of them, but would have, had she had the chance. We lost her 1 year ago and at her funeral all her grandchildren recieted it for her. Very emotional and touching. We will keep this song as a part of her forever and pass the history of it on through generations.

As a Louisianian this song has always been a favorite of ours. I can remember hearing and seeing Jimmy Davis singing this song when I was a little boy. Hello, my name is Miss Jennifer George , I'm from USA. I want to testify that there is a spell caster that is genuine and real. I never really believed in any of these things but when I was loosing my boy friend sam, I needed some one to help me when I found prophet okoro ahebhamhen spells and i ordered a LOVE SPELL. After some days later, my phone rang when sam call me to apologize. sam was his old self again and wanted to come back to me! Not only come back, the spell caster opened his eyes to know how much I loved and needed him. Spell Casting is not brainwashing but they opened his eyes to how much we have to share together. Anyone who is in my old situation or have some other problem should consult prophet okoro. He will bring you wonderful surprises as well as your lover back to you. The way things were meant to be." You can contact the great spell caster at ahebhamhenspell@gmail.com. He is very nice and great.

OK, I'll be the first to admit this about myself: I just didn't believe this stuff works, but it DOES! I am a professional with an advanced degree, and I work in finance. The people I work with have no idea I turned to you for help in matters of the heart, but what matters is that I did, because it was through Prophet Ajiniso and his encouraging, inspiring words and his special, God-given gift that I met my own "Lady," the one of my dreams. She appeared in my life almost on cue. I admit I didn't really believe the spell would work, but what did I have to lose? Thanks for a win-win situation all the way around. just visit: darkabolajispell@gmail.com and see for your self.

I just want to share my experience and testimony here.. I was married for 6 years to my husband and all of a sudden, another woman came into the picture.. he started hailing me and he was abusive..but I still loved him with all my heart and wanted him at all cost? then he filed for divorce..my whole life was turning apart and I didn't know what to do..he moved out of the house and abandoned the kids.. so someone told me about trying spiritual means to get my husband back and introduced me to a spell caster? so I decided to try it reluctantly..although I didn't believe in all those things? then when he did the special prayers and spell, after 2days, my husband came back and was pleading..he had realized his mistakes..i just couldn't believe it.. anyways we are back together now and we are happy..in case anyone needs this man, his email address prophetsalifu@gmail.com, his spells is for a better life. again his email is prophetsalifu@yahoo.com.

Hello, my name is Miss Georgina peckett, I'm from USA.I want to inform you all that there is a spell caster that is genuine and real.I never really believed in any of these things but when I was losing Gilbert, I needed help and somewhere to turn badly. I found consultant.kalakuta spells and i ordered a LOVE SPELL. Several days later, my phone rang.Gilbert was his old self again and wanted to come back to me! Not only come back, the spell caster opened him up to how much I loved and needed him. Spell Casting isn't brainwashing, but they opened his eyes to how much we have to share together. I recommend you if you are in my old situation to try it. It will bring you a wonderful surprises as well as your lover back to you. The way things were meant to be. you can contact the spell caster on-- kalakutaspells@gmail.com he's very nice and great.

My dad sang this song to me all the time when I was little, and I loved it. It is one of my favorite memories. He's gone, now, but I can still hear his voice in my memories.

My children fall asleep to this song often. You Are My Sunshine is one of the few lullabies that make sense. I would rate this about an eight out of ten. It is wonderful, soothing, and relaxing.
