Lyrics

Golden Slumbers

Golden slumbers kiss your eyes,
Smiles awake you when you rise.
Sleep, pretty wantons, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby:
"Rock them, rock them, lullaby".

Care is heavy, therefore sleep you;
You are care, and care must keep you;
Sleep, pretty wantons, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby:
"Rock them, rock them, lullaby".

Information About Golden Slumbers

"Golden Slumbers" is an old English poem written by Thomas Dekker, which features in a play called 'Patient Grissel' by Henry Chettle, Thomas Dekker, and William Haughton, and was first printed in 1603. The plot of the play is a variant of a medieval tale found in Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales'.

This very poem's lyrics were the inspiration for the Paul McCartney song of the same name found on The Beatles 'Abbey Road' album of 1969.

This is another version you can sing if little baby is still awake

Golden slumbers kiss your eyes,
Smiles await you when you rise.
Sleep, pretty baby, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby.

Cares you know not, therefore sleep,
while over you a watch I'll keep.
Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby.
