Lyrics
Here we go 'round the mulberry bush,
The mulberry bush, the mulberry bush.
Here we go 'round the mulberry bush,
So early in the morning.
This is the way we wash our clothes,
We wash our clothes, we wash our clothes.
This is the way we wash our clothes,
So early Monday morning.
This is the way we iron our clothes,
We iron our clothes, we iron our clothes.
This is the way we iron our clothes,
So early Tuesday morning.
This is the way we scrub the floor,
We scrub the floor, we scrub the floor.
This is the way we scrub the floor,
So early Wednesday morning.
This is the way we mend our clothes,
We mend our clothes, we mend our clothes.
This is the way we mend our clothes,
So early Thursday morning.
This is the way we sweep the house,
We sweep the house, we sweep the house.
This is the way we sweep the house,
So early Friday morning.
This is the way we bake our bread,
We bake our bread, we bake our bread.
This is the way we bake our bread,
So early Saturday morning.
This is the way we go to church,
We go to church, we go to church.
This is the way we go to church,
So early Sunday morning.
Information About Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush
James Orchard Halliwell first recorded 'Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush' as a children's game in the mid-nineteenth century. "Here we go round the bramble bush" was an alternative early version.
It has been suggested that this song was originally sung by prisoners of Wakefield Prison (Yorkshire, UK) whose means of exercise was to be walked around the mulberry tree within the prison grounds and that this ancient tree still exists behind the prison gates. However there is no evidence to confirm this story.
Another great song to get you in the mood is Hide and Seek..
This is not the only song on BusSongs to feature London Bridge. We also have London Bridge is Broken which has a rather similar theme!
"My Fair lady" in the song is a sarcastic reference to the unpopular Queen Eleanor, whose husband, Henry II gave her the bridge tolls in 1269 - which she spent on herself instead of the upkeep of the bridge, which is why if fell into such serious disrepair.
The "Silver and Gold" of the "stolen away" verse may well refer to those tolls. Although we've also heard it said that it is a reference to the merchants and traders who also had premises built on the bridge - including gold and silversmiths.
There is a similar song that is sung in Norway although it does not have the same melody. In Norway the song is connected with Christmas. People sing the lyrics as they dance around the Christmas tree.
All Around the Mulberry Bush is a very similar song.
