Lyrics

Hot Time In The Old Town Tonight

Late one night
When we were all in bed
Old Mother Leary
Left a lantern in the shed.

And when the cow kicked it over,
She winked her eye and said,
"There'll be a hot time
In the old town, tonight".

Information About Hot Time In The Old Town Tonight

Hot Time in the old town tonight is a parody of the American song "A Hot Time in the Old Town", composed in 1896 by Theodore August Metz and Joe Hayden. Metz was the band leader of the McIntyre and Heath Minstrels.

One history of the song reports "While on tour with the McIntyre and Heath Minstrels, their train arrived at a place called 'Old Town'. From their train window, Metz could see a group of children starting a fire, near the tracks. One of the other minstrels remarked that 'there'll be a hot time in the old town tonight'.

The dialect and narrative of the song intimate an African-American revival meeting. The song was a favorite of the American army in the early 20th Century.

The parody version was inspired by Catherine O'leary, an Irish immigrant in Illinois, whose cow allegedly started the great Chicago Fire of 1871. This is referenced in the song, "Late one night, When we were all in bed, Old Mother Leary, Left a lantern in the shed, And when the cow kicked it over?".
