Information About She'll be Comin' 'round the Mountain
"She'll Be Coming "Round the Mountain" is an American folk song and is believed to have been written during the late 1800s but was first printed only in 1927 in Carl Sandburg's book The American Songbag.
It is believed that the song was inspired by an old African American spiritual song entitled "When the Chariot Comes", it also uses the same melody.
There is no clarification as to who the "She" in the song is but the song may have been used by railroad work gangs in reference to the train coming along the tracks. Carl Sandburg believed that "she" is a union organizer named Mary Harris "Mother" Jones who was attempting to promote labor union formation in the Appalachian coal mining camps.
The song first appeared in print with Carl Sandburg's The American Songbag published in 1927. The song dates back to the late 1980's. The union organizer 'Mother Jones" inspired the lyrics. The song is descended from a black spiritual titled When the Chariot Comes.
This is one of the best known songs to come from railroading. Considered to be an adaptation of a spiritual that accounts for its 'singability' and longevity down to our day. The song was written as railroads began to bring families back together that had been separated for generations as a result of moving westward. The first part song speaks of the excitement experienced as railroads brought families closer together. Six white horses refers to horsepower and type of engine. Passenger engines were painted bright colors and some had the rims of the wheels painted white. This train had six driving wheels, six white horses. Other verses talk about the celebration to take place as a result of her "coming around the mountain".
