Lyrics

Go Tell it on the Mountain

While shepherds kept their watching
O'er silent flocks by night,
Behold throughout the heavens
There shone a holy light.

chorus:
Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born.

The shepherds feared and trembled
When lo! above the earth
Rang out the angel chorus
That hailed our Savour's birth;.

chorus.

Down in a lowly manger
Our humble Christ was born;
And God sent us salvation
that blessed Christmas morn.

chorus.

When I was a seeker
I sought both night and day
I sought the Lord to help me
And He showed me the way.

chorus.

He made me a watchman
Upon the city wall
And If I am a Christian
I am the least of all.

chorus.

Information About Go Tell it on the Mountain

"Go Tell It On The Mountain" originates from an African American spiritual and can be traced back as far as 1865. The song was arranged by John Works in 1907 and compiled in his songbook which was the first book to publish African American folks-songs, many of which were sung by slaves. Many of these songs would have been lost forever were it not for John's work in collecting and publishing them.

In the 1960s folk singers Peter, Paul, and Mary rewrote the lyrics, calling it 'Tell It on the Mountain'. Their version was used as a civil rights theme song.

"Go Tell It on the Mountain" has been recorded by many popular artists including Simon and Garfunkel. Sheryl Crow. Dolly Parton. and Garth Brooks. Wikipedia has compiled a long list of artists who have included this song on either Christmas-themed albums or folk-song compilations.

Debbie Trafton O'Neal has illustrated this song in a children's book that also includes finger plays and other activities.

While not necessarily a Christmas song, the lyrics obviously celebrate the birth of Christ.
