Lyrics

If All The World Were Paper

If all the world were paper,
And all the sea were ink,
If all the trees
Were bread and cheese,
What should we have to drink.

Information About If All The World Were Paper

"If All The World Were Paper ' is an old English folk song that dates back to at least the reign of Charles I.

The song, with six verses, is printed in "Witt's Recreations" described as a book of 'ingenious conceites' and 'merrie medecines', published in 1641. The tune for "If all the World were Paper" appears in "Playford English Dancing Master" published in 1651.

It is believed the song originated as a parody of the extravagant language used in ancient Jewish and Medieval Adoration.

Shirley Temple has recorded a version of the song.
