Lyrics

Monkey and Chimp (Abba dabba dabba)

Way down in the congo land sitting in a coconut tree,
there was a monkey and a chimp--and Lordy how she loved him.
Everynight in the pale moonlight sitting in the coconut tree,
these love words she always said to he. .

"Abba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba"
said the monkey to the chimp.
"Abba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba"
said the chimpee to the monk.
All night long they chattered away.
All day long they were happy and gay,
swinging and swaying in a honky, tonky way.

"Abba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba"
said the chimp, "I love but you".
Abba dabba dabba in monkey talk means
"Chimp, I love you too".
Then the ol' baboon, one night in June,
married them and very soon,
they sailed away on an abba dabba honeymoon.

Information About Monkey and Chimp (Abba dabba dabba)

Aba Daba Honeymoon, or Abba Dabba Dabba, also known as the Monkey and Chimp song, was published in 1914 by Arthur Fields and Walter Donovan. It was first recorded that same year by Collins and Harlan, although it really became famous when recorded by Debbie Reynolds and Carleton Carpenter in 1950.

This rendition reached #3 on the Billboard Magazine chart the next year. It has been recorded a few times since and was featured in two movies, Two Weeks With Love and Have Rocket Will Travel. The tune was alsoused in Fritos commercials during the '70s and '80s.

The song can attribute its longevity to its catchy tune, and also the lyrics. Having a monkey and chimp talk to each other, fall in love and become married by a "big baboon,' followed by their honeymoon, most certainly appeals to children.

Free copies of sheet music are available on the web including one with cords for the ukulele. More about the Aba Daba Honeymoon can be found on Wikipedia.

An alternative to the first verse of the song

Way down in the Congo land lived a happy chimpanzee
She loved a monkey with a long tail, Lordy how she loved him!
Each night you could find them there, sitting in the coconut tree.
And the monkeys say, by the break of day, you could hear the chimpee say. .
